Everyone feels frustrated at one time or another. How we handle frustration
is the key to the outcome. Try to consider where is the fustration coming from. People? Circumstances? Things?
Are you frustrated due to an unfulfilled desire? Evaluate whether that desire is a need or a want. You have
to realize that if you don't receive something you want, it isn't the end of it all.
How do you cope when dealing with frustration?
Some people manage well by speaking to themselves. "What?!! I'm not crazy!"
you may say. Talking to yourself in a productive and positive manner can stop destructive behaviours and reassure you
that "Yes, everything will be ok." It makes the difference on whether you will react in rage, harbor resentment,
or view the situation as a minor setback.
Another way would be to walk away from the situation to
cool down and gather your thoughts. This definitely helps when you find yourself at the point of blowing up, hurting
yourself (say punching a wall or something), or hurting someone else (which could also lead to problems with the law).
What
Causes Anger?
Frustration
Hurt (rejection,
physical and/or emotional pain)
Fear
These feelings cause us to
blame others for our behaviours and actions. A person may be angry because they want to dominate; to be looked at as
powerful and not weak, and make others think they have everything under control. An angry person will wound others because
they have been wounded.
What Are The Results Of Anger?
Anger Destroys Relationships
Do you find yourself having shouting matches with your spouse?
Are you constantly
yelling at your kids because that is the only way they will listen?
Do you become angry when a close friend points
out something in you that disturbs them?
These things will surely distance your family and friends away from
you.
Anger Destroys Health
There are physical changes that occur when someone is angry. The nostrils may flare,
the pupils become dilated, the skin is flush red, the blood pressure elevates and the heart beats faster. You may experience
a headache and/or shortness of breath.
If suppressed, anger
may lead to a stroke or heart attack and mental health issues. Internally, all major organs are affected leading to
many health issues.
Is this one emotion worth all that?
What does the Bible have to say about anger?
" Be
ye angry and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath;" Eph 4:26
It speaks of anger that is aroused but must be kept in control. There are many things which can make us angry
and we would be justified to be such as rapes, incest, child abuse, injustices of any kind, etc. But we most be careful
not to "miss the mark" and do something contrary to the law of God. Let it not be something that will destroy
us day and night.
"But now ye also put of all these; anger, wrath,
malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." Col 3:8
"Whoso
is slow to anger is of great understanding, and whoso is short in temper is exalting folly."
Prov 14:29 YNG
Anger is an emotion that has to be dealt with wisely.
Never let it get the best of you by destroying your relationships and your health. Learn how to control anger
and not it control you.
" So then, my beloved brethen, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak,
slow to wrath;" James 1:19
"Anger: an acid that
can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured."
Lucius Annaeus Seneca
