What is an affirmation?
An
affirmation is defined as a positive statement. It is a declaration of something declared to be true; no supporting
evidence is necessary. This is to say that it is not based on what you "see" in the physical or what situation
you are in.
Why are affirmations important?
It is written
:
"out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks"
see Matthew 12:34 and Luke 6:45.
"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he"
Psalms 23:7a
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who
love it will eat its fruit." Proverbs 18:21
"The words of a man's mouth are deep
waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook." Proverbs 18:4
"Deep calls
unto deep at the noise of your waterfalls; all your waves and billows have gone over me." Psalms 42:7
These verses are only a sampling of the many verses in the bible that speak along the same theme.
In summary, we see that the way we think will be manifested in our words and the way we think of ourselves is the way
we will live out our lives. We also see that Words have Power and we call to ourselves the things we speak and think. In knowing this, why not declare the good things
that are already spoken of through the Word of God?
Speak the Affirmations
Take out time
and speak the affirmations daily, especially when confronted with difficult situations. Meditate (which
is hagah in Hebrew and means to moan, mutter, utter, speak) on God's word already spoken and declared for your
life {see Joshua 1:8}. Be in one accord, one mind in believing that God's promises for your life are true.
May Christ be formed in you (Gal. 4:19) and manifested.

What Did Jesus Say?
There are
some Christians who do not believe in speaking affirmations and have dismissed it as "New Age, Occultic, or Psycho-babble."
In turn they preach against it and instill fear upon their followers. In whatever we do as followers of Christ, we should
go to the living word, the logos, to search on any given thing.
So let us go and check what did Jesus say? We
come across the verses where He says if you have faith and say to a mountain (your situation/problem) to move,
it shall be done. We also see that He also used words to heal or perform miracles. {
Matt 17:20, 21:21, Mark 11:23} In Matthew 8:5-10, we read about the centurion who came to Jesus asking for help on behalf
of his sick servant. Jesus was willing to go to the servant but the centurion replied, "Lord, I am not worthy that
You should come under my roof. But speak the word only and my servant shall be healed." Jesus
was astonished and told his followers that He had not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
Why did Jesus
say that? By the passage, it shows that the centurion realized that there was power through the spoken
word!
